Professor Sophia Chan Siu-chee, Director of the HKU Primary Health Care Academy (PHCA) under the School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Health and Nursing Workforce Development in Primary Health Care, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in recognition of her outstanding contributions to nursing science, the nursing profession, public health, and health policy.
The RCN’s Honorary Fellowship is one of the College’s highest honours, conferred upon distinguished leaders who are not members of the College, in recognition of their exceptional contribution to the nursing profession. This international accolade further affirms Professor Chan’s longstanding dedication to advancing nursing development and improving population health.
Professor Chan said, “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the Royal College of Nursing. This honour highlights the importance of continuously advancing nursing science, professional nursing development and nurturing nursing talent. I have also recently assumed the role of Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Health and Nursing Workforce Development in Primary Health Care. I will continue to promote the professional development and capacity building of nurses in primary health care, supporting their expanding role in health promotion, disease prevention, community-based care and chronic disease management, while working closely with local, regional and international partners to advance workforce development and health system transformation. I share this honour with my colleagues and partners who have worked alongside me throughout the years.”
Professor Chan also leads the HKU JC Nursing Leadership Development Fellowship Programme at the University, which offers the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership and Management (PCHLM). In collaboration with renowned universities in the United Kingdom and the United States, the Programme promotes nursing leadership development and international academic exchange, with the aim of equipping participants with the capabilities needed to understand and respond to evolving challenges in health care, empowering them to take on leadership roles and drive change within the health system upon completion of the Programme.
